Pharmacological action

The drug Ammonia is an analeptic agent that has a stimulating effect on the respiratory center-reflexively, acting through the receptors of the upper respiratory tract (these are the endings of the trigeminal nerve). Causes reflex respiratory arrest by inhaling ammonia vapors in high concentrations. When applied topically to the skin-antiseptic effect. With prolonged contact, the irritating effect on the skin and mucous membranes can turn into cauterizing (protein coagulation) with the development of hyperemia, swelling and soreness – it is quickly excreted with exhaled air.

Indications

Topically: in the form of lotions for insect bites, as well as to neutralize acidic toxins in insect and snake bites. Ammonia is used as an ambulance to stimulate breathing and bring patients out of a fainting state.

Contraindications

For external use – skin diseases (including eczema, dermatitis), children under 3 years of age. Hypersensitivity to the Active ingredient.

Side effects

Hypersalivation, respiratory arrest, sore throat, hyperemia of the mucous membranes of the oral cavity, stomach (when taken orally) and burns of the esophagus.

How to take, course of use and dosage

Inside, topically, by inhalation. To excite breathing, as well as to bring patients out of a fainting state-by inhalation: carefully bring a small piece of cotton / gauze moistened with ammonia to the nasal openings (for 0.5-1 s) / apply an ampoule with a braid (when breaking off the tip of the ampoule, the cotton-gauze braid is soaked in the solution). Overdose

Clinic of ammonia poisoning when ingested: convulsions, runny nose, cough, vomiting with a characteristic smell, stomach pain, diarrhea with tenesmus, laryngeal edema, agitation, collapse — death, delirium.
