Pharmacological action

Pharmaceutical action:
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, has anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects. Selectively inhibits cyclooxygenase activity (COX-1 and COX-2) and inhibits prostaglandin synthesis.
Phenylbutazone inhibits the synthesis of ATP-dependent mucopolysaccharides.
Butadione is used to eliminate pain and reduce swelling associated with the inflammatory process. When applied topically, it relieves or disappears joint pain at rest and when moving. Reduces morning stiffness and swelling of the joints, helps to increase the volume of movement.
Indications
- Post-traumatic inflammation of soft tissues and joints, for example, as a result of sprains, overexertion, and bruises.
- Rheumatic diseases of soft tissues (tendovaginitis, bursitis, periarticular tissue damage), muscle pain of rheumatic and non-rheumatic origin.
- Pain and swelling associated with diseases of the muscles and joints.
- Rheumatoid arthritis.
- Osteoarthritis.
- Sciatica.
- Lumbago.
- Sciatica.
Use during pregnancy and lactation
The drug is contraindicated in the first and third trimesters of pregnancy due to the possibility of fetal development disorders.
In the second trimester of pregnancy, the use of Butadione is possible only if the intended benefit to the mother exceeds the potential risk to the fetus.
If it is necessary to use the drug during lactation, it is recommended to stop breastfeeding.
Contraindications
- Data on a history of an attack of bronchial obstruction, allergic rhinitis, urticaria after taking acetylsalicylic acid or other NSAIDs.
- I and III trimesters of pregnancy.
- Breast-feeding period.
- Violation of the integrity of the skin at the site of the intended application.
- Children under 14 years of age.
- Co-use with other drugs containing phenylbutazone.

Side effects
Local reactions: eczema, photosensitization, contact dermatitis (itching, redness, swelling of the treated skin area; papules, vesicles, peeling.
Allergic reactions: urticaria, angioedema, bronchospasm, generalized skin rash.
Interaction
No clinically significant interaction of Butadion with other medicinal products has been established.
Co-use of Butadione with other NSAIDs should be avoided.
Butadione may enhance the effect of drugs that cause photosensitization.
How to take, course of use and dosage
Externally.
Adults and children over the age of 14 years: the drug is applied in a thin layer, a strip of 2-3 cm above the focus of inflammation without rubbing 2-3 times / day.
The course of treatment is 7-10 days. After 10 days of use, you should consult your doctor.
Elderly patients: there is no need for a special application regimen.
Overdose
Extremely low absorption of the active components of the drug with external use makes overdose almost impossible.
Symptoms: if you accidentally swallow large amounts of ointment (more than 20 g), you may experience systemic adverse reactions characteristic of NSAIDs.
Treatment: gastric lavage, taking activated charcoal is necessary.
Special instructions
If redness of the skin occurs, therapy should be discontinued.
The ointment should only be applied to undamaged skin, avoiding contact with open wounds. After application, do not apply an occlusive dressing. Do not allow the drug to get into the eyes and mucous membranes.
The drug should not be used for the treatment of deep vein thrombophlebitis of the extremities. To prevent photosensitization, protect the skin from direct sunlight. When combined with other medicinal forms of Butadione, the maximum daily dose of this drug should be taken into account.
