Pharmacological action
Pharmacotherapeutic group: digestive enzyme agent
ATX code: A 09 AA 02
Pharmacological properties
Pancreatin is a powder from the pancreas of pigs.
Pancreatic enzymes (lipase, amylase, protease) have proteolytic, amylolytic and lipolytic effects and contribute to the breakdown of proteins, fats, carbohydrates, improve the functional state of the gastrointestinal tract( GIT), thus normalizing the digestive processes. Active trypsin is supposed to inhibit feedback-type stimulated pancreatic secretion in the upper small intestine. The analgesic effect of pancreatin preparations, described in some cases, is associated with this effect. Pancreatic enzymes are not absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract, are excreted through the intestines, most of them are denatured under the action of digestive juices.
Indications
- Disorders of the enzyme (exocrine) function of the pancreas in diseases of the gastrointestinal tract accompanied by digestive disorders.
- To improve the digestion of food in patients with normal gastrointestinal function in case of nutritional errors.
Use during pregnancy and lactation
There are no data on the use of pancreatin during pregnancy and lactation. During pregnancy and lactation, the use of pancreatin by the attending physician is possible only if the intended benefit to the mother exceeds the possible risk to the fetus or child.
Recommendations for use
Contraindications
- hypersensitivity to any of the components of the drug.
- acute pancreatitis or exacerbation of chronic pancreatitis. However, it is possible to use in the phase of fading exacerbation with the expansion of the diet, if there are signs of digestive disorders;
- children under 3 years of age (for this dosage form).
Side effects
Possible side effects are listed below by descending frequency: very common (≥ 1/10), common (≥ 1/100, < 1/10), uncommon (≥ 1/1000, < 1/100), rare (≥ 1/10000, < 1/1000), very rare (
Immune system disordersVery rare: immediate allergic reactions. Frequency unknown: possible allergic reactions to the components of the drug (see the section “Composition”).
Disorders of the gastrointestinal tractVery rare: hypersensitivity of the gastrointestinal tract (for example, diarrhea, epigastric discomfort, nausea).
Interaction
It is possible to reduce the absorption of folic acid, which may require additional intake when used simultaneously with pancreatin. The effect of hypoglycemic agents for oral use (acarbose, miglitol) may decrease when used simultaneously with drugs containing digestive enzymes that break down carbohydrates (for example, amylase).
How to take, course of use and dosage
The dose of Mezym ® forte is determined individually depending on the degree of digestive disorders.
Adults: take 1-2 tablets before meals inside, without chewing and with water (the effectiveness of the drug Mezym ® forte may decrease with chewing, and pancreatic enzymes may irritate the oral mucosa when released).
If necessary, take an additional 2-4 tablets during meals.
In cases where higher doses of pancreatin are required, a doctor should be consulted to prescribe a higher dosage depending on the symptoms (for example, a decrease in the severity of steatorrhea, abdominal pain).
The duration of treatment can vary from several days (in case of digestive disorders due to errors in the diet) to several months or even years (if permanent replacement therapy is required).
In children, the drug is used as prescribed by a doctor.
Overdose
No cases of overdose were reported.
Description
pink, flat-cylindrical coated tablets with almost flat-parallel surfaces and beveled edges, with a characteristic smell.
