Actiferrin is an iron preparation.
Iron is essential for the vital functions of the body: it is a part of hemoglobin, myoglobin, and a number of enzymes; reversibly binds oxygen and participates in a number of redox reactions; and stimulates erythropoiesis.
Part of the Actiferrin alpha-amino acid serine promotes more efficient absorption of iron and its entry into the systemic bloodstream, which leads to a rapid restoration of normal iron content in the body.
The inclusion of the alpha-amino acid serine in the composition allows you to reduce the dose of iron, providing better tolerability of the drug.
When using the drug Actiferrin, iron deficiency in the body is rapidly replenished, which leads to a gradual regression of clinical (weakness, fatigue, dizziness, tachycardia, soreness and dry skin) and laboratory symptoms of anemia.
Hemolytic and aplastic anemia; increased iron content in the blood.
From the digestive system: rarely-a feeling of heaviness in the epigastric region, flatulence, constipation or diarrhea that disappears with a decrease in the dose.
Antacids, calcium supplements, drugs that reduce the acidity of gastric juice (including cimetidine, drugs containing carbonates, bicarbonates, phosphates, oxalates), pancreatin, pancreolipase, ethidron, caffeine, reduce the absorption of Actiferrin (the interval between taking these drugs should be 1-2 hours).
When used together, ascorbic acid increases iron absorption. Actiferrin reduces the absorption of fluoroquinolones, penicillamine, and tetracyclines (these drugs are recommended to be taken 2 hours before or 2 hours after taking iron supplements).
Actiferrin in high doses reduces the renal absorption of zinc preparations (these drugs are recommended to be taken 2 hours after taking iron preparations).
Ethanol increases iron absorption and increases the risk of toxic complications.
For newborns and young children, the daily dose of Actiferrin is set at the rate of 5 drops/1 kg of body weight; the frequency of use is 2-3 times/day.

For infants,10-15 drops are taken 3 times a day.

Treatment with the drug is continued for at least 8-12 weeks after normal serum iron and hemoglobin levels are reached, and a maintenance dose is prescribed.
Symptoms: if the drug is accidentally taken in very high doses, weakness, fatigue, paresthesia, pallor of the skin, decreased blood pressure, palpitation, acrocyanosis, abdominal pain, diarrhea with blood admixture, vomiting, cyanosis, confusion, weak pulse, hyperthermia, lethargy, convulsive seizures, hyperventilation symptoms, coma are possible.
Signs of peripheral vascular collapse appear within 30 minutes after ingestion; metabolic acidosis, convulsions, fever, leukocytosis, coma-within 12-24 hours; acute renal and hepatic necrosis – after 2-4 days.
Treatment: before carrying out specific therapy – gastric lavage, taking milk, raw egg. Specific therapy is carried out by prescribing deferoxamine (desferal) orally and parenterally.
In acute poisoning,5-10 g of deferoxamine is given inside to bind iron that has not yet been absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract by dissolving the contents of 10-20 ampoules in drinking water. To remove absorbed iron, deferoxamine is administered intravenously slowly, in children-15 mg / h, in adults-5 mg / kg / h (up to 80 mg/kg/day); in case of mild poisoning – in children-1 g every 4-6 hours, in adults – 50 mg/kg (up to 4 g/day).
In severe cases, accompanied by the development of shock, intravenous drip use of the drug is performed at a dose of 1 g and symptomatic therapy is performed.
Hemodialysis is ineffective for the elimination of iron, but can be used to accelerate the elimination of the iron-deferoxamine complex, and can also be prescribed for oligo – and anuria. Peritoneal dialysis is possible.
Use with caution in patients with peptic ulcer of the stomach and duodenum, inflammatory bowel diseases (enteritis, diverticulitis, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease), chronic alcoholism, allergic diseases, bronchial asthma, hepatitis, liver and kidney failure, rheumatoid arthritis, blood transfusion. Caution should be exercised when prescribing Actiferrin to patients with diabetes mellitus, since the drug contains carbohydrates: 18 drops (1 ml) – 64 mg, which is equivalent to 0.15 XE and 0.0053 XE, respectively.
Actiferrin is not washed down with black tea, coffee, or milk to avoid reducing iron absorption. In addition, a decrease in absorption can be caused by solid foods, bread, raw cereals, dairy products, eggs. The break between taking Actiferrin and using the listed products should be 1-2 hours.
To prevent the appearance of reversible dark plaque on the teeth of patients, Actiferrin drops should not be taken undiluted, and it is recommended to thoroughly brush your teeth after meals.
When taking Actiferrin, fecal staining is noted in black, which is not of clinical significance.
Use in patients with liver function disorders
Use with caution in patients with hepatitis, hepatic insufficiency.
Use in patients with impaired renal function
Use with caution in patients with renal insufficiency.
Monitoring of laboratory parameters
With the course use of Actiferrin, systematic monitoring of serum iron and hemoglobin parameters is necessary.
