tinidazole 500 mg
Pharmacological action
Tinidazole is an antiprotozoal drug with an antibacterial effect.
The mechanism of action is due to inhibition of synthesis and damage to the DNA structure of pathogens.
Active against Trichomonas vaginalis, Entamoeba histolytica, Lamblia intestinalis.
It has a bactericidal effect against the following anaerobic bacteria: Bacteroides spp. (including Bacteroides fragilis, Bacteroides melaninogenicus), Clostridium spp., Eubacterium spp., Fusobacterium spp., Peptococcus spp., Peptostreptococcus spp., Veillonella spp.
Indications
- Trichomoniasis, giardiasis, amoebiasis (including hepatic form and amoebic dysentery). Infections of various locations caused by anaerobic bacteria (skin and soft tissue infections, pneumonia, empyema, lung abscess, with acute ulcerative gingivitis).
- Eradication of Helicobacter pylori (in complex therapy with bismuth preparations and antibiotics).
- The drug is used to prevent postoperative infectious complications caused by anaerobes.
Use during pregnancy and lactation
Tinidazole is contraindicated in the first trimester of pregnancy.
The use of the drug in the second and third trimesters is possible only in cases where the intended benefit to the mother exceeds the potential risk to the fetus.
If it is necessary to use Tinidazole during lactation, the question of stopping breastfeeding should be decided.
It should be noted that tinidazole is detected in breast milk within 72 hours after use.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to the drug or other derivatives of 5-nitroimidazole,
- organic diseases of the central nervous system,
- inhibition of bone marrow hematopoiesis,
- I trimester of pregnancy,
- lactation period.
- Children under 12 years of age.
Side effects
From the digestive system: possible anorexia, dry and unpleasant taste in the mouth, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea.
From the central nervous system and peripheral nervous system: headache, dizziness, ataxia, peripheral neuropathy; rarely – convulsions.
Allergic reactions: urticaria, pruritus, skin rash, angioedema.
Other: rarely-transient leukopenia, weakness.
Interaction
Increases the effect of indirect anticoagulants (to reduce the risk of bleeding, the dose is reduced by 50%) and the effect of ethanol (disulfiram-like effect).
It is not recommended to take with ethionamide. Phenobarbital accelerates your metabolism.
It is compatible with sulfonamides and antibiotics (aminoglycosides, erythromycin, rifampicin, cephalosporins).
How to take, course of use and dosage
The dosage regimen is individual.
Adults-1.5-2 g 1 time / day; children (except for the prevention of postoperative anaerobic infections) – 50-75 mg / kg 1 time/day.
The duration of treatment is determined by the clinical situation and can be 1-10 days.
Overdose
Currently, cases of Tinidazole overdose have not been described.
Treatment: perform symptomatic therapy.
Tinidazole is eliminated during dialysis.
There is no specific antidote.
Special instructions
When treating trichomoniasis, both sexual partners should be treated simultaneously.
If adverse reactions from the central nervous system occur, Tinidazole should be discontinued.
During treatment with tinidazole, you should refrain from drinking alcohol because of the possible development of antabus-like reactions.
The drug causes a dark staining of the urine.
Monitoring of laboratory parameters
If the treatment lasts more than 6 days, regular monitoring of the peripheral blood picture should be carried out.
Influence on the ability to drive motor vehicles and manage mechanisms
Patients taking the drug should refrain from engaging in potentially dangerous activities that require increased attention and speed of psychomotor reactions.
