Pharmacological action

Pharmaceutical action:

 Digestive enzyme agent, replenishes the deficiency of pancreatic enzymes, has proteolytic, amylolytic and lipolytic effects. Included in the pancreatic enzymes (lipase, alpha-amylase, trypsin, chymotrypsin) they promote the breakdown of proteins to amino acids, fats to glycerol and fatty acids, starch to dextrins and monosaccharides, improve the functional state of the gastrointestinal tract, normalize digestive processes.

Trypsin suppresses the stimulated secretion of the pancreas, having an analgesic effect. Pancreatic enzymes are released from the dosage form in the alkaline environment of the small intestine, because they are protected from the action of gastric juice by the shell.

The maximum enzymatic activity of the drug is noted in 30-45 minutes after oral use.

Indications

Insufficiency of external secretory function of the pancreas (chronic pancreatitis, cystic fibrosis, etc. ).

Chronic inflammatory and dystrophic diseases of the stomach, intestines, liver, gallbladder; conditions after resection or irradiation of these organs, accompanied by impaired digestion, flatulence, diarrhea (as part of combination therapy.

To improve food digestion in patients with normal gastrointestinal function in cases of nutritional errors.

Preparation for X-ray and ultrasound examination of the abdominal organs.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to the components of the drug, acute pancreatitis, exacerbation of chronic pancreatitis, children under 6 years of age.

Side effects

From the digestive system:  in some cases-diarrhea, constipation, a feeling of discomfort in the stomach, nausea. A causal relationship between the development of these reactions and the action of pancreatin has not been established, since these phenomena relate to symptoms of external secretory pancreatic insufficiency.

Allergic reactions:  in some cases – skin manifestations.

From the side of metabolism:  with prolonged use in high doses, hyperuricosuria may develop, and in excessively high doses-an increase in the level of uric acid in blood plasma.

Other services:  when using pancreatin in high doses in children, perianal irritation may occur.

Interaction

When used concomitantly with antacids containing calcium carbonate and/or magnesium hydroxide, the effectiveness of pancreatin may decrease.

With simultaneous use, it is theoretically possible to reduce the clinical effectiveness of acarbose.

With simultaneous use of iron preparations, iron absorption may decrease.

How to take, course of use and dosage

Inside. The drug is taken during or after a meal, without chewing and washed down with a non-alkaline liquid (water, fruit juices). The dose is determined individually depending on the degree of digestive disorders. Adults usually take 2-4 tablets 3-6 times a day. The maximum daily dose is 16 tablets. In children over 6 years of age, the drug is used as prescribed by a doctor. The dose is determined individually. Usually prescribed 1 tablet 2 times a day. The duration of treatment can vary from several days (if the digestive process is disrupted due to dietary errors) to several months or years (if permanent replacement therapy is required).
