Antimicrobial agent of plant origin

Pharmacological Action

Herbal remedy. It exerts bactericidal, antiviral, and fungicidal effects, associated with phytoncides and the glycoside allicin. Garlic is effective against pathogens of intestinal infections (dysentery, typhoid, pathogenic enterococci, Escherichia coli with altered enzymatic properties), staphylococci, alpha-hemolytic streptococci.

The glycoside alliin is converted by the enzyme alliinase into allicin, which possesses antimicrobial activity. Garlic is eubiotic; thanks to vitamins C, B, D, PP, it contributes to the normalization of the functions of the automicroflora.

It improves digestion processes, enhances the formation and secretion of bile, contributes to the reduction of cholesterol and glucose levels in the blood, has a beneficial effect on metabolism, especially in patients with diabetes mellitus and obesity.

Due to organic acids, vitamins, macro- and microelements (especially magnesium, potassium, selenium, zinc, manganese), it stimulates hematopoiesis, exhibits antihypoxic and angioprotective effects. Cardiotonic action in combination with the expansion of peripheral vessels and hypolipidemic action contributes to the normalization of the functions of the cardiovascular system, especially in elderly patients. Anthelmintic effect is manifested in ascariasis and enterobiasis.

When applied externally, especially in fresh form, in addition to antimicrobial action, manifestations of antihistaminic, analgesic, antipruritic, keratolytic, and depigmenting action are possible; it stimulates hair growth.
