Pharmacological Action

Aloe is a common species in South Africa. These plants have large water reserves in their tissues. The thick, fleshy leaves form a dense rosette at the top, from the center of which a large red flower stalk rises.

The mother tincture is prepared from the evaporated, concentrated juice of the cut leaves.

This dark juice with a very bitter taste contains:

  • Anthracene glycosides – aloin (or barbaloin) and derivatives, traces of aloe-emodin;
  • A resinous fraction from a combination of esters of acetic and p-coumaric acids, which contributes to the laxative effect of aloe;
  • Traces of essential oil.
