Pharmacological Action

Berberis vulgaris, or common barberry is used in measured doses in conventional medicine preparations.

It acts as an antipyretic and choleretic agent.

It possesses spasmolytic, cytotoxic, and hypotensive action and exerts a mutagenic effect on yeast cells (intercalating agent).

Indications

Key symptoms for prescribing the drug

  • Pain in the lumbar region, especially localized on the right side, radiating from top to bottom, spreading to the thighs, knees, heels;
  • Dyspepsia accompanied by nausea, thick saliva, drowsiness after eating, pale yellowish stools with alternating constipation and diarrhea;
  • Itching annular dermatosis with skin peeling in thin flakes and the formation of pigmented areolas;
  • Hyperuricemia accompanied by disorders of the urinary system or joints. Urine is dark red with abundant sediment.

Main cases of clinical application

Urology

  • Urolithiasis, particularly uric acid lithiasis;
  • All diseases accompanied by insufficient diuresis;
  • Inflammation of the testicles and seminal tubule.

Hepato-gastroenterology

  • Dysfunction of the hepatic-cystic ducts: dyspepsia associated with overeating;
  • Gallstones.

Dermatology

  • Annular dermatosis, pityriasis rosea;
  • Dry eczema, psoriasis-like dermatosis;
  • Inguinal dermatomycosis with itching and burning (Hebra’s prurigo), pityriasis versicolor (in addition to local topical treatment and chronic treatment of mycosis), dermatophytosis of the trunk.

Rheumatology

  • Gout and joint symptoms in patients suffering from hyperuricemia;
  • Pain in the lumbar and lumbosacral region.

Dosage Regimen

The method of application and dosage regimen for a specific drug depend on its form of release and other factors. The optimal dosage regimen is determined by the doctor. Sublingually.

The granules should be dissolved in the mouth 30 minutes before meals or 60 minutes after meals.

For children from 0 to 3 years old, the granules are first diluted by shaking in 10-15 ml of water at room temperature and given to drink 30 minutes before meals or 60 minutes after meals.

The optimal amount per dose is 5 granules.
