Pharmacological Action

Unroasted coffee consists of raw, green beans – the fruits of small trees or large shrubs growing in Ethiopia or on the Arabian Peninsula.

The dominant active substance is the well-known purine base – caffeine, a substance frequently used in classical therapy, similar in properties to theophylline, whose toxicity should not be forgotten, and from which caffeine differs only by a methyl group. Unroasted coffee contains at least 1% caffeine, and the Robusta variety contains 3%.

In unroasted coffee, caffeine is in a free form (chlorogenic acid).

The mother tincture Coffea cruda (Coffea cruda) is prepared from dried, unroasted coffee beans without the shell. It contains

  • Mineral substances;
  • Carbohydrates;
  • Fats, including saponifiable lipids consisting of diterpenes (cahweol, cafestol);
  • Carbohydrates;
  • Phenolic acids (chlorogenic acid);
  • Nitrogen-containing organic compounds;
  • Trigonelline – a derivative of nicotinic acid;
  • Purine bases (besides caffeine) – theophylline and theobromine.
