Pharmacological Action

Solanum Dulcamara is a woody creeping plant that typically grows in damp ravines and along stream banks.

Chemical composition

  • Saponins, which have an anti-rheumatic effect;
  • Steroidal glycoalkaloids, which have a toxic effect. The type of glycoalkaloid depends on the plant’s geographical origin (soladulcine in Eastern Europe, tomatidenol in Western Europe).

Indications

Key symptoms for prescribing the drug

  • Nasal congestion in high humidity;
  • All symptoms worsen from damp cold;
  • Pronounced cough reflex;
  • Pains:
    • Acute, “tearing” or stabbing, like neuralgia;
    • Dull, like a numb limb or a bruise.

Main cases of clinical application

Otorhinolaryngology and Pulmonology

  • Rhinopharyngitis, characterized by a sensation of nasal congestion after exposure to cold in damp or foggy weather (due to phlegm in the throat, the patient has to clear their throat). Swelling of the cervical lymph nodes is often noted, coinciding with episodes of rhinopharyngitis;
  • Increased body temperature after exposure to damp cold;
  • Asthma or tracheobronchitis with a dry or wet cough after chilling in damp weather.

Gastroenterology

  • Diarrhea coinciding with cold spells or the onset of damp weather, especially after summer heat.

Rheumatology

  • Pain in muscles and tendons in cold, damp weather or after chilling due to heavy sweating or wet clothing. To facilitate movement (due to the coincidence of conditions), the drug can be prescribed together with Rhus toxicodendron if fibrous connective tissue is affected.

Dermatology

  • Flat warts, molluscum contagiosum;
  • Dermatoses (including prurigo), worsening in damp, cold weather (chronic urticaria).
