Pharmacological Action
Equisetum hiemale is a perennial plant with an evergreen stem up to one meter high.
It grows on sandy soils, in damp areas, and along riverbanks in most of Europe. The mother tincture is prepared from the fresh aerial parts. In allopathy, the plant is used orally as a diuretic, hemostatic, and remineralizing agent; externally, it is used as a wound-healing preparation.
The plant contains many active substances.
- Minerals (especially silicon, calcium, potassium, magnesium, and iron);
- Phenolic acids;
- Flavonoids;
- Traces of alkaloids (nicotine, palustrine).
The high content of silicon, calcium, magnesium, and iron determines the plant’s remineralizing action.
