Pharmacological Action
An anti-inflammatory agent, it exerts antimicrobial (bactericidal against Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes), keratoplastic action.
It has antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, and local anesthetic effects.
The anti-inflammatory effect is associated with the inhibition of the release of inflammatory mediators.
When applied externally, it accelerates the maturation of boils.
Upon direct action on the skin, it causes mild irritation of sensitive nerve endings, followed by a decrease in their sensitivity, which leads to the occurrence of reflexes that change tissue trophism.
It causes denaturation of protein molecules.
When used rectally, ichthammol has an irritant effect on the mucous membrane of the rectum, as a result of which blood circulation in the pelvic organs is reflexively enhanced, metabolism improves, which helps eliminate inflammation in the prostate gland in men, ovaries, fallopian tubes, and uterus in women.
Indications
As part of complex therapy
For rectal use – salpingo-oophoritis, endometritis, chronic nonspecific prostatitis;
For external use – erysipelas, eczema, pyoderma, including furunculosis.

Dosage Regimen
| The method of application and dosage regimen for a specific drug depend on its form of release and other factors. The optimal dosage regimen is determined by the doctor. It is necessary to strictly adhere to the compliance of the dosage form of a specific drug with the indications for use and dosage regimen. |
Apply the ointment externally to affected skin areas 1-2 times daily.
Use a thin layer; cover with a sterile dressing if indicated.
Administer rectal suppositories 1-2 times daily, typically after bowel movements or at bedtime.
Thoroughly cleanse and dry the anal area before application.
For suppository use, insert deeply into the rectum.
The duration of treatment is determined by the physician based on clinical response.
Do not exceed the prescribed application frequency or treatment period.
Discontinue use and consult a physician if irritation, burning, or allergic reactions occur.
Ensure the selected dosage form (ointment or suppository) matches the specific indication.
For external use, avoid application on broken skin, open wounds, or mucous membranes unless directed.
Wash hands thoroughly before and after handling the product.
Adverse Reactions
Possible allergic reactions.
When used rectally: sensation of burning in the anal area.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to ichthammol; age under 18 years (for rectal use); children under 12 years of age; pregnancy, breastfeeding period, impaired integrity of the skin (for external use).
Use in Pregnancy and Lactation
During pregnancy and breastfeeding, ichthammol should be used only after consultation with a doctor, in cases where the intended benefit to the mother outweighs the potential risk to the fetus or infant.
Pediatric Use
Contraindicated for rectal use in children and adolescents under 18 years of age, for external use – in children under 12 years of age.
Special Precautions
The correspondence of the used dosage form to the indications for use should be observed.
Drug Interactions
Incompatible with solutions of iodine salts, alkaloids, salts of heavy metals, zinc oxide.
Storage Conditions
Store at 2°C (36°F) to 25°C (77°F). Keep in original packaging, protected from light. Keep out of reach of children.
