Pharmacological Action

A herbal preparation. The essential oil (carvacrol – 40-70%, gamma-terpinene, p-cymene, alpha-pinene, myrcene, thymol), tannins, flavonoids, caffeic acid and its derivatives (especially rosmarinic acid – 5%), and vitamins provide a wide spectrum of pharmacological activity of oregano herb.

Oregano herb has an expectorant effect, enhances intestinal peristalsis and tone, increases gastric juice secretion, and has a choleretic and diuretic effect. Galenic preparations of oregano have anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and analgesic properties. As an infusion, it has a sedative effect.

Indications

As part of complex therapy.

Orally: for respiratory tract diseases as an expectorant (acute and chronic bronchitis, acute respiratory viral infections); for secretory insufficiency of the gastrointestinal tract, intestinal atony and enterocolitis accompanied by constipation and flatulence.

Externally: for pyoderma and atopic dermatitis.

Dosage Regimen

Herbal raw material

Approximately 10 g (2 tablespoons) of crushed oregano herb is placed in a glass or enamel bowl, poured with 200 ml (1 cup) of hot boiled water, covered with a lid and heated in a boiling water bath for 15 minutes, then cooled at room temperature for 45 minutes, strained, and the remaining raw material is squeezed out. The volume of the resulting infusion is adjusted to 200 ml with boiled water.

Take orally warm, 1/4-1/2 cup 2 times a day 15 minutes before meals. Externally used for baths or as lotions 2-3 times a day. The infusion is recommended to be shaken before use.

Powder

4 filter bags (6.0 g) are placed in a glass or enamel bowl, poured with 200 ml (1 cup) of boiling water, covered and infused for 15 minutes, periodically pressing on the bags with a spoon, then they are squeezed out. The volume of the resulting infusion is adjusted to 200 ml with boiled water.

Take orally warm, 1/4-1/2 cup 2-3 times a day 15 minutes before meals. The infusion is used locally as lotions. The course of treatment is 2 weeks. The infusion is recommended to be shaken before use.

Adverse Reactions

Possible allergic reactions.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to Origanum vulgare.

For oral use – pregnancy, period of breastfeeding; age under 18 years; hyperacid gastritis, gastric and duodenal ulcer (in the acute stage).

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation

Oral use is contraindicated during pregnancy, due to the tonic effect of oregano on the contraction of the smooth muscles of the uterus.

There is no information on the excretion of active substances of oregano with breast milk. If it is necessary to use the product orally, breastfeeding should be discontinued.

Pediatric Use

Contraindicated for use in children and adolescents under the age of 18 years.

Special Precautions

Oregano herb is included in sedative and thoracic preparations.

Effect on ability to drive vehicles and mechanisms

Considering that oregano has a sedative effect, during the use of oral dosage forms, patients should avoid driving vehicles and other activities that require high concentration and speed of psychomotor reactions.

Drug Interactions

When using oregano orally as an expectorant, the simultaneous use of drugs containing codeine and other antitussives is not recommended, as this makes it difficult to expel liquefied sputum.

Storage Conditions

Store at 2°C (36°F) to 25°C (77°F). Keep in original packaging, protected from light. Keep out of reach of children.
