Pharmacological Action
Pulsatilla is a herbaceous plant with large single flowers of red or violet color.
The pharmacological action is mainly due to a glycoside called ranunculoside, from which glucose and protoanemonin are formed by enzymatic hydrolysis; protoanemonin is an unstable substance that quickly turns into anemonin.
Pulsatilla is known for its antispasmodic action, which is manifested mainly in spasmodic cough, gastrointestinal spasms, and uterine pain.
Protoanemonin, as well as the juice of the fresh plant, has antibacterial and vesicant action.
