Pharmacological Action

Valeriana officinalis is a herbaceous plant found in all regions of Europe with a temperate climate. The white or pinkish flowers are grouped in terminal umbel-shaped inflorescences.

The mother tincture, prepared from the roots, contains numerous active ingredients, including:

  • Amino derivatives;
  • A small amount of alkaloids;
  • Essential oil rich in bornyl acetate;
  • Sesquiterpene acids;
  • Lignans;
  • Iridoids, valepotriates, which have a sedative effect in cases of agitation, insomnia, and palpitations; they also possess cytotoxic and antitumor activity, but their toxicity should be considered during long-term treatment.

Indications

  • Pain resembling cramps and twitching;
  • Sensation of suffocation, pharyngeal spasms (sensation of a lump in the throat), spasms of the esophagus or stomach;
  • Sensation of vague suffering.

Main cases of clinical application

Behavioral disorders

  • Initial insomnia in people with increased excitability;
  • Spasms of the gastrointestinal tract and larynx;
  • Myoclonus in those suffering from spasmophilia;
  • Sciatica and lumbosacral pain of psychogenic origin.

Dosage Regimen

The granules should be dissolved in the mouth 30 minutes before a meal or 60 minutes after a meal.
