Dosage Regimen

The method of application and dosage regimen for a specific drug depend on its form of release and other factors. The optimal dosage regimen is determined by the doctor. It is necessary to strictly adhere to the compliance of the dosage form of a specific drug with the indications for use and dosage regimen.

The recommended dosage for adults and children over 12 years of age is one tablet twice daily, providing a total daily intake of 800 mg of calcium and 400 mg of magnesium.

Tablets should be taken with a meal and a full glass of water to improve tolerance and absorption. The tablet can be swallowed whole; it should not be chewed or crushed.

Do not exceed the recommended daily dose. The duration of continuous use should not exceed two months without consulting a physician. A second course of use is possible after a one-month break or on the advice of a doctor.

Adverse Reactions

Adverse reactions are generally mild and infrequent when taken at the recommended dosage. The most commonly reported reactions are related to the gastrointestinal tract.

These may include constipation, flatulence, bloating, abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, or nausea. These symptoms often subside as the body adjusts to the supplement.

In rare cases, allergic reactions such as skin rash, itching, or urticaria may occur. Excessive intake can lead to more serious conditions. Hypercalcemia (elevated blood calcium) may manifest as nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, constipation, abdominal pain, thirst, dry mouth, polyuria, muscle weakness, and mental confusion.

Hypermagnesemia (elevated blood magnesium) can cause facial flushing, thirst, hypotension, drowsiness, and in severe cases, muscle weakness, difficulty breathing, and cardiac arrhythmias. If any adverse reactions occur, discontinue use and consult a healthcare professional.

Drug Interactions

Calcium and magnesium can bind to other medications in the gastrointestinal tract, potentially reducing their absorption and effectiveness. To minimize this risk, it is advised to take Vivacia Calcium & Magnesium at least 2 hours before or 4 hours after taking other oral medications.

Specific interactions include: Tetracycline and fluoroquinolone antibiotics (e.g., ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin) – concurrent administration significantly reduces antibiotic absorption. Bisphosphonates (e.g., alendronate), used for osteoporosis, and thyroid hormones (e.g., levothyroxine) – calcium can impair their absorption. Iron supplements – calcium may interfere with iron absorption. Cardiac glycosides (e.g., digoxin) – hypercalcemia can potentiate the toxic effects of digoxin, increasing the risk of arrhythmias. Thiazide diuretics – can reduce calcium excretion, increasing the risk of hypercalcemia. Medications for myasthenia gravis – magnesium can antagonize the effects of neostigmine and pyridostigmine. Always inform your doctor about all the products you are taking, including other dietary supplements.

Overdose

Accidental overdose of calcium and magnesium supplements is dangerous and requires immediate medical attention. Symptoms of overdose are primarily those of severe hypercalcemia and hypermagnesemia.

Clinical manifestations may include profound nausea and vomiting, severe constipation, abdominal pain, dehydration, renal impairment, kidney stones, lethargy, muscle weakness, mental confusion, coma, and cardiac arrhythmias.

In case of suspected overdose, discontinue the supplement immediately and seek emergency medical help. Treatment is supportive and may include gastric lavage if ingestion was recent, administration of intravenous fluids to promote calcium and magnesium excretion, and monitoring of cardiac and renal function. Hemodialysis may be considered in severe cases, particularly for hypermagnesemia.
