Dietary supplement – additional source of zinc
Indications
- This dietary supplement is intended for use as an additional source of zinc to support general health and well-being.
- Zinc is an essential trace element that plays a crucial role in numerous enzymatic reactions and is vital for immune system function, cellular metabolism, and protein synthesis.
- It may be used to help support a healthy immune response, particularly during seasons of heightened immune challenge.
- Zinc picolinate is a highly bioavailable form, which may be beneficial for individuals with dietary restrictions, inadequate nutritional intake, or increased requirements.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity or individual intolerance to any of the components of the dietary supplement, including zinc picolinate or the auxiliary substances (microcrystalline cellulose, dicalcium phosphate, magnesium stearate).
- Severe kidney impairment or renal failure, as impaired excretion can lead to zinc accumulation and potential toxicity.
- Patients with known Wilson’s disease (a genetic disorder of copper metabolism), as zinc can interfere with copper absorption and alter the balance of these metals, which is a critical aspect of disease management.
- Concomitant use with certain antibiotics (e.g., tetracyclines, quinolones) is not an absolute contraindication but requires careful timing of administration (see Drug Interactions).
Dosage Regimen
| The method of application and dosage regimen for a specific drug depend on its form of release and other factors. The optimal dosage regimen is determined by the doctor. It is necessary to strictly adhere to the compliance of the dosage form of a specific drug with the indications for use and dosage regimen. |
For adults, take one (1) tablet per day with a meal, swallowed whole with a full glass of water. Taking zinc with food can help minimize potential gastrointestinal discomfort.
The duration of use is one to two months. If necessary, the course can be repeated after consulting a healthcare professional. It is not recommended to exceed the stated daily dosage.
This supplement provides 22 mg of elemental zinc per tablet, which is 147% of the Recommended Daily Intake (RDI). Do not use other zinc-containing supplements concurrently without medical advice to avoid exceeding the tolerable upper intake level.
Adverse Reactions
When taken at the recommended dosage, adverse reactions are uncommon. However, some individuals may experience gastrointestinal disturbances.
These can include nausea, epigastric discomfort, heartburn, or a metallic taste in the mouth. These effects are generally mild and often transient, subsiding as the body adjusts or if the supplement is taken with food.
In rare cases, allergic reactions such as skin rash, itching, or urticaria may occur, particularly in individuals with known sensitivities. If any adverse reaction is severe or persistent, discontinue use and consult a physician.
Long-term consumption of high doses of zinc far exceeding the recommended level can lead to copper deficiency, which may manifest as neurological symptoms or anemia.
Drug Interactions
Zinc can interact with several medications, potentially reducing the absorption and efficacy of both the drug and the mineral.
Tetracycline and Quinolone Antibiotics: Zinc can form insoluble complexes with these antibiotics in the gastrointestinal tract, significantly reducing their absorption. It is crucial to separate the administration of zinc supplements and these antibiotics by at least 2-4 hours (taking the antibiotic first).
Penicillamine: Zinc may reduce the absorption and efficacy of penicillamine, a drug used for Wilson’s disease and rheumatoid arthritis. Administration should be separated by at least 2 hours.
Diuretics: Certain thiazide diuretics (e.g., hydrochlorothiazide) can increase the renal excretion of zinc, potentially leading to decreased zinc levels in the body over time. Monitoring may be advisable during concurrent long-term use.
Iron and Calcium Supplements: High doses of iron or calcium can interfere with zinc absorption. If you are taking these supplements, it is best to take them at different times of the day (e.g., zinc with breakfast, iron/calcium with lunch or dinner).
Overdose
Acute overdose with zinc is rare but can occur with intentional ingestion of large quantities. Symptoms of acute zinc toxicity may include severe nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, dizziness, and restlessness.
Chronic overdose is a more common concern with long-term intake of doses significantly above the recommended level. The primary risk is the induction of copper deficiency, as high zinc levels interfere with copper absorption. This can lead to hematological changes such as microcytic anemia unresponsive to iron therapy, and neurological manifestations including sensory neuropathy and gait disturbances.
In case of suspected overdose, discontinue the supplement immediately and seek medical attention or contact a poison control center. Treatment is primarily supportive and symptomatic. For significant acute ingestion, gastric lavage may be considered. Monitoring of copper and zinc status is essential in cases of chronic overdose.
