Pharmacological Action
Cantharis (Spanish fly) is a golden-green insect with a metallic sheen from the blister beetle family, found mainly in southern Europe.
The mother tincture, prepared from whole dried insects, contains: cantharidin, which causes
- A local reaction, namely redness of the skin or the appearance of blisters with cloudy contents (phlyctena);
- A general reaction, namely damage to the genitourinary system.
The tincture also contains
- Uric acid, acetic acid;
- Choline and acetylcholine;
- Fats and cholesterol;
- Calcium and magnesium phosphates.
Indications
Key symptoms for prescribing the drug
- Severe burning and “sharp, stabbing” pain;
- Sensations as from a wound on the skin or mucous membrane;
- Increased sensitivity of the skin on the affected organs, worsening upon palpation.
Main cases of clinical application
Urology
- Acute cystitis, regardless of origin, characterized by the following symptoms:
- Constant severe burning, often with the appearance of blood in the urine;
- Burning and cutting pains, before and during urination, worsening at the end of urination; strong and constant false urge to urinate.
For recurrent cystitis, the drug is prescribed at the first sign of pain; in most cases, timely administration of the drug allows avoiding the use of antibiotics. Can be used for acute and recurrent cystitis to relieve symptoms in addition to antibiotics.
- Painful aphthous ulcers of the genitals, burning sensation on the mucous membranes with signs of inflammation and swelling or white viscous and caustic discharge;
- Oliguria as a result of burns.
Dermatology
- Second-degree burns:
- Burns from exposure to hot liquid;
- “sunstroke” and radiation dermatitis;
- Radiation dermatitis.
The protective effect of the drug on the kidney parenchyma in extensive burns cannot be overestimated.
- Herpes;
- Pemphigoid:
- Herpes gestationis;
- Zosteriform herpes simplex;
- Eczema with rashes and vesicles, with a tendency to peel and develop necrosis;
- Erythroderma of various etiologies and toxicoderma with vesicular rashes;
- Cutaneous porphyria.
Otorhinolaryngology
- Laryngitis accompanied by hoarseness, a sensation of “scratching”, burning or spasms in the throat, worsening upon palpation of the neck;
- Ulcerative-membranous tonsillitis (non-streptococcal), accompanied by laryngeal spasms and a persistent sensation of burning in the throat;
- Acute tympanitis, bullous otitis.
Gastroenterology
- Aphthous stomatitis accompanied by a persistent sensation of burning in the mouth;
- Gastritis with heartburn, hydrophobia despite intense thirst;
- Enterocolitis and proctosigmoiditis accompanied by:
- Severe, cutting abdominal pains, worsening with pressure, easing with warm compresses and pulling the knees to the chest;
- Foul-smelling foamy stools as in dysentery, false urge to defecate.
Ophthalmology
- Acute keratoconjunctivitis, particularly damage to the conjunctiva after exposure to natural or artificial radiation (snow ophthalmia, “welder’s flash”), accompanied by unbearable pain.
Pulmonology
- Pleurisy.
Dosage Regimen

Sublingually.
The granules should be dissolved in the mouth 30 minutes before meals or 60 minutes after meals.
For children from 0 to 3 years old, the granules are first diluted by shaking in 10-15 ml of water at room temperature and given to drink.
The optimal amount per dose is 5 granules.
