Indications

Contraindications

• Patients with a known severe allergy to shellfish should exercise extreme caution and consult a physician before use, as glucosamine is frequently sourced from crustacean shells.
• Use is not recommended in children, adolescents, pregnant women, or nursing mothers due to the lack of sufficient scientific data on safety in these populations.
• Individuals with severe bleeding disorders (e.g., hemophilia) or those taking anticoagulant therapy should consult a doctor before use, as chondroitin sulfate may theoretically possess mild blood-thinning properties.
• Patients with asthma should be cautious, as rare cases of exacerbation have been reported with glucosamine intake.

Dosage Regimen

The recommended dosage for adults is one capsule daily.

The capsule should be taken with a sufficient amount of water (approx. 200 ml) and is ideally consumed with a meal to improve gastrointestinal tolerance.

It is important to maintain regular daily intake for the supplement to exert its full supportive effect, as the benefits on joint health are associated with cumulative and long-term use.

Do not exceed the recommended daily dose. The duration of use is not limited; however, it is advisable to consult a physician for prolonged continuous use beyond several months to reassess individual needs.

Adverse Reactions

Doppelherz Aktiv Glucosamine + Chondroitin is generally well tolerated when used at the recommended dosage. However, as with any supplement, adverse reactions may occur in some individuals.

The most commonly reported adverse effects are mild gastrointestinal disturbances. These may include symptoms such as epigastric discomfort, heartburn, nausea, diarrhea, or constipation. Taking the capsule with meals can often mitigate these effects.

Less frequently, allergic reactions may occur, particularly in individuals with known sensitivities to the source materials. Symptoms can range from mild skin rashes and pruritus to more severe manifestations like angioedema or dyspnea, especially in shellfish-allergic patients.

Other rarely reported side effects include headache, drowsiness, peripheral edema, and tachycardia. If any adverse reaction is severe or persists, discontinue use immediately and consult a healthcare professional.

Drug Interactions

While significant drug interactions are not widely documented for dietary supplements, potential interactions should be considered based on the pharmacological properties of the components.

Anticoagulants and Antiplatelet Drugs (e.g., Warfarin, Acenocoumarol, Clopidogrel, Aspirin): There is a theoretical risk that chondroitin sulfate, due to its structural similarity to heparin, may potentiate the effects of these medications, increasing the risk of bleeding or bruising. Close monitoring of coagulation parameters (INR) is advised if used concomitantly.

Antidiabetic Medications (e.g., Insulin, Metformin, Sulfonylureas): Some reports suggest that glucosamine may affect insulin resistance and blood glucose levels. Patients with diabetes should monitor their blood glucose levels more frequently when initiating this supplement, as an adjustment of antidiabetic medication might be necessary.

Cyclophosphamide and Doxorubicin: In vitro studies suggest glucosamine might interfere with the efficacy of these chemotherapeutic agents. Concurrent use is not recommended without medical supervision.

It is crucial to inform your doctor or pharmacist about all the medicines you are taking, including prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal products, to ensure safe co-administration.

Overdose

In case of accidental intake of a significantly higher than recommended dose, seek immediate medical attention or contact a Poison Control Center.

There is no specific antidote for an overdose of glucosamine and chondroitin. Symptoms of overdose are likely to be an extension of the adverse reactions profile, primarily severe gastrointestinal upset (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea).

Medical management should be symptomatic and supportive. Gastric lavage or administration of activated charcoal may be considered if the overdose is recent. Ensure adequate hydration, especially if vomiting or diarrhea is persistent.

To avoid the risk of overdose, always adhere to the recommended dosage and store the product out of the reach of children.
