Therapeutic Category

Dietary supplement for supporting thyroid function

Properties

Dietary supplement to food. An additional source of iodine.

Iodine and iodides affect thyroid functions. In case of iodine deficiency, iodides help restore impaired synthesis of thyroid hormones. With normal environmental iodine content, iodides inhibit the synthesis of thyroid hormones, reduce the sensitivity of the thyroid gland to pituitary TSH and block its secretion by the pituitary gland. The effect of iodine on metabolism is manifested by an intensification of catabolic processes. In atherosclerosis, iodine and iodides cause some decrease in the concentration of cholesterol and beta-lipoproteins in the blood; in addition, they increase the fibrinolytic and lipoproteinase activity of blood serum and slow down the blood clotting rate.

Dietary supplements containing iodine may include L-tyrosine, vitamin C, B vitamins, vitamin E, as well as selenium.
