Pharmacological Action

Yellow jasmine or Carolina jasmine is a creeping shrub that grows wild in the southeastern United States; the plant was introduced to Europe in the 17th century.

Chemical composition

  • Resin;
  • Lipids;
  • Sterols;
  • Alkaloids with indole structure:
    • Gelsemine,
    • Gelsemicin – a highly toxic substance, little known and present in the plant in small quantities;
    • Sempervirine;
    • Gelsemine;
  • Hydroxycoumarin (scopoletol).

Indications

Key symptoms for prescribing the drug

  • Fatigue, general weakness, lethargy, stupor, internal trembling;
  • Generalized pain;
  • Sensation of heaviness in the limbs;
  • Diplopia;
  • Headache preceded by visual disturbances;
  • Headache in the occipital region, spreading to the neck and shoulder muscles;
  • Sensation that “the heart will stop beating if the patient does not move”.

Main cases of clinical application

Infectious Diseases

  • Influenza and influenza-like syndrome. Gelsemium is prescribed in the presence of the following symptoms:
    • Prostration and tremor, sometimes pronounced;
    • Venous congestion in the brain, manifested by facial hyperemia and severe headache;
    • Pain and feeling of heaviness in the limbs;
    • Absence of thirst;
    • Dengue fever in pseudo-influenza form

Neurology

  • Headaches and migraine:
    • Congestive headache, mainly in the occipital region, spreading to the neck and shoulder muscles, as well as severe pain in the eyeballs;
    • Migraine, especially the ophthalmoplegic form (Möbius syndrome), when the pain is relieved with the appearance of visual disturbances. Such disturbances are usually accompanied by apathy and prostration, improving with the head in a high position or with profuse urination.
    • Neuropraxia due to prolonged compression or stretching;
    • Tremor, worsening with emotional distress;
    • Myasthenia.

Behavioral Disorders

  • Anxiety neurosis: in depression with excessive preoccupation, memory impairment, tremor and emotionally-induced diarrhea or pollakiuria;
  • Anxiety (the drug is prescribed for symptoms similar to the previous ones, occurring daily);
  • Consequences of severe affective or emotional shock;
  • Insomnia (when manifested simultaneously with anxiety).

Dosage Regimen

The method of application and dosage regimen for a specific drug depend on its form of release and other factors. The optimal dosage regimen is determined by the doctor. It is necessary to strictly adhere to the compliance of the dosage form of a specific drug with the indications for use and dosage regimen.

Sublingually.

The granules should be dissolved in the mouth 30 minutes before meals or 60 minutes after meals.

For children from 0 to 3 years old, the granules are first diluted by shaking in 10-15 ml of water at room temperature and given to drink.

The optimal amount per dose is 5 granules.
