Pharmacological Action

Hyoscyamus niger (black henbane) is an annual or biennial plant covered with sticky hairs, with an unpleasant odor.

The mother tincture is prepared from the entire flowering plant.

The active substances are ester alkaloids: hyoscyamine, atropine and scopolamine (or hyoscine).

The plant exerts

• An antispasmodic effect on the smooth muscles of the digestive tract and bronchi;

• A sedative effect on the CNS.

Indications

Key symptoms for prescribing the drug

• Sensation of levitation;

• Dyschromatopsia (objects are seen in red) and dysmegalopsia (objects appear larger than they actually are);

• When reading, letters seem to move or jump.

Main cases of clinical application

Behavioral disorders

• Insomnia in nervous and excited children who scream in their sleep and wake up abruptly;

• Nervousness with insomnia, lustful dreams or manifestations of spasmophilia, accompanied by fear, fits of jealousy, sentimental disappointment, sometimes with pythiatic convulsive seizures and characteristic manifestations of sexual arousal;

• Delusional manifestations characteristic of extremely weak elderly people, with a pale and haggard face, suspicious, jealous, refusing care.

Other indications

• Nocturnal spasmodic cough, worsening when lying down, decreasing when sitting;

• Hiccups;

• In severe infections (very severe typhoid states, etc.) with adynamia, dryness of the oral and pharyngeal mucous membranes, tremor, myoclonus, carphology, urinary incontinence and characteristic delirium.

Dosage Regimen

Sublingually.

The granules should be dissolved in the mouth 30 min before meals or 60 min after meals.

For children from 0 to 3 years old, the granules are first diluted by shaking in 10-15 ml of water at room temperature and given to drink.

The optimal amount per dose is 5 granules.
