Pharmacological Action

Herbal remedy. Mother and stepmother leaves contain from 5 to 10% mucilaginous substances, the glycoside tussilagin, tannins, saponins, organic acids, inulin, and sitosterol.

Due to the high content of mucilage, mother and stepmother has an enveloping effect on the mucous membranes of the upper respiratory tract. Furthermore, mucilage, organic acids, and saponins liquefy dry secretions, restore the natural movement of the cilia of the respiratory tract ciliated epithelium, and improve sputum expectoration.

Tannins, carotenoids, and sterols have a pronounced anti-inflammatory and weak bacteriostatic effect. Flavonoids and essential oils of the plant have a slight antispasmodic effect.

Indications

Diseases of the upper respiratory tract (including laryngitis, tracheitis, chronic bronchitis, bronchial asthma). Furunculosis, wounds, ulcers.
