Pharmacological Action

Rhus toxicodendron (poison ivy) is a deciduous, dioecious shrub with trifoliate leaves, native to the United States and Japan.

Chemical composition

• Phenol derivatives (urushiols);
• Gallotannin;
• The flavonoid fisetin.

Indications

Key symptoms for prescribing the drug

• Pain, bruising, stiffness, numbness;
• Dry mouth and throat (during febrile conditions);
• “tearing”, pulling neuralgia;
• Herpetic eruptions;
• Improvement of all symptoms with movement.

Main cases of clinical application

Dermatology

All types of erythematous and edematous or vesicular skin diseases

• Eczema;
• Infections caused by the herpes simplex virus, including labial herpes.

Rhus toxicodendron is usually prescribed for primary infection and recurrent herpes caused by herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2 (HSV1 and HSV2); in such cases, treatment should be started as soon as possible: for recurrences, the best results are achieved when the drug is used before the appearance of vesicles, when only preliminary signs are noted. This can reduce the manifestations of the disease and sometimes even prevent its development. After long-term treatment, the frequency of recurrences gradually decreases.

• Herpes zoster (improvement occurs faster with early initiation of treatment);
• Rosacea.

Rheumatology

• Rheumatic pains caused or worsened by high humidity;
• Sciatica with “tearing” pain, pulling pains along the nerve pathways, worsening at rest and improving with movement.

Rhus toxicodendron is prescribed, for example, for sciatica that occurs after the patient has been caught in the rain, or after hypothermia due to sweating.

Traumatology

• Dislocations, pain from dislocations after reduction;
• Tendency to muscle fatigue; excessive muscle strain.

Infectious Diseases

• Influenza, influenza-like conditions;
• Microbial infections, especially viral (including those caused by the herpes virus), with pronounced clinical symptoms;
• Dengue fever;
• Chickenpox.

In infectious conditions when the use of antibacterial drugs is necessary, Rhus toxicodendron can be a useful and effective addition.

Otolaryngology

• Hoarseness and dysphonia.

The drug is prescribed in cases of dysphonia that begins when the patient attempts to speak or sing and subsequently decreases. This phenomenon is often associated with severe vocal strain.

• Herpetic gingivostomatitis;
• Herpetic angina.

Ophthalmology

• Phlyctenular keratoconjunctivitis;
• Herpetic keratoconjunctivitis;
• Inflammation of the iris.

Note: This treatment requires special monitoring.

Dosage Regimen

Sublingually.

The granules should be dissolved in the mouth 30 minutes before meals or 60 minutes after meals.

For children from 0 to 3 years old, the granules are first diluted by shaking in 10-15 ml of water at room temperature and given to drink.

The optimal amount per dose is 5 granules.
