Pharmacological Action

Sanguinaria canadensis (bloodroot) – is a perennial herbaceous plant with a thick rhizome, growing in North America in forests and on rocks. The stems contain a red milky sap, hence the name of the plant.

The mother tincture is prepared from the dried rhizome. It contains

  • Organic acids – malic, citric, chelidonic;
  • Alkaloids – sanguinarine, chelerythrine, protopine, chelidonine, coptisine, berberine.

Sanguinarine has an effect on

  • The central nervous system (stimulating action);
  • Respiratory centers and airways;
  • The cardiovascular system;
  • Mucous membranes of the digestive organs, causing diarrhea and vomiting.

It has antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and antifungal action.

Indications

Key symptoms for prescribing the drug

  • Intense burning in the palms and soles, which forces the patient to hang their feet off the bed;
  • Dryness and burning on the mucous membranes, which crack and become sore;
  • Burning in the nose and throat, with improvement occurring upon inhaling fresh air;
  • Tinnitus (ringing).

Main cases of clinical application

Headaches and migraines

  • Periodic migraines, especially when they occur at the end of the week, predominantly right-sided;
  • Tension headache.

Gynecology

  • Hot flashes during menopause.

Otolaryngology

  • Acute rhinitis, recurrent rhinitis occurring from the slightest hypothermia;
  • Allergic rhinitis, especially hay fever with increased sensitivity to smells, primarily to the smell of flowers;
  • Nasal polyposis with bleeding.

  • Red acne on the cheeks with flushing of the face.

  • Pain in the right deltoid muscle.

Dosage Regimen

The method of application and dosage regimen for a specific drug depend on its form of release and other factors. The optimal dosage regimen is determined by the doctor. Sublingually.

The granules should be dissolved in the mouth 30 minutes before a meal or 60 minutes after a meal.

For children from 0 to 3 years old, the granules are first diluted by shaking in 10-15 ml of water at room temperature and given to drink.

The optimal amount per dose is 5 granules.
