Composition

Active ingredient:

Pharmacological action

Antiseptic and disinfectant.

Released from the complex with PVP, upon contact with the skin and mucous membranes, iodine forms iodamines with bacterial proteins, coagulates them and causes the death of microorganisms.

It has a rapid bactericidal effect on gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria (with the exception of M. tuberculosis). It is effective against fungi, viruses, and protozoa.

Indications

• bacterial and fungal skin infections;
• burns;
• trophic ulcers;
• bedsores;
• infectious dermatitis;
• abrasions;
• wounds.

Use during pregnancy and lactation

Betadine is not recommended for use from 3 months of pregnancy and during lactation.

If it is necessary to conduct therapy, the doctor decides on the appointment of the drug individually.

It is necessary to monitor the thyroid function in newborns and children whose mothers used Betadine.

Contraindications

• hypersensitivity to iodine and other components of the drug;
• thyroid dysfunction (hyperthyroidism) (see “Special instructions”);
• thyroid adenoma;
• Duhring’s dermatitis herpetiformis;
• simultaneous use of radioactive iodine;
• premature and newborn children (see “Special Instructions”).

With caution: pregnancy and lactation, chronic renal failure.

Side effects

Possible: local manifestation of an allergic reaction to iodine (itching, hyperemia), which requires discontinuation of the drug.

Interaction

Incompatible with other antiseptics, especially those containing alkalis, enzymes and mercury.

In the presence of blood, the bactericidal effect may decrease, but with an increase in the concentration of the drug, the bactericidal activity may be increased.

How to take, course of administration and dosage

The ointment is applied in a thin layer to the affected areas several times a day.

Special instructions

In case of thyroid disorders, the drug can only be used under strict medical supervision.

The use of the drug in newborns is possible only in case of emergency, after studying the function of the thyroid gland.

Caution should be exercised when used regularly on damaged skin in patients with chronic renal failure.

At the site of application, a colored film is formed, which persists until the entire amount of active iodine is released, which means that the drug stops working. Staining on leather and fabrics is easily washed off with water.

Do not use when biting insects, domestic or wild animals.
