Pharmacological Action

A herbal preparation. It causes a moderately pronounced sedative effect.

The action is due to the content of essential oil, most of which is the ester of borneol and isovaleric acid.

Valepotriates and alkaloids – valerine and chotenine – also have sedative properties.

Valerian facilitates the onset of natural sleep.

The sedative effect develops slowly but is quite stable.

Valeric acid and valepotriates have a weak spasmolytic effect.

In addition, the complex of biologically active substances of Valeriana officinalis has a choleretic effect, enhances the secretory activity of the gastrointestinal mucosa, slows the heart rate, and dilates the coronary vessels.

The regulation of cardiac activity is mediated through neuroregulatory mechanisms and a direct influence on the automation and conduction system of the heart.

The therapeutic effect is manifested with systematic and long-term course treatment.

Dosage Regimen

The method of application and dosage regimen for a specific drug depend on its form of release and other factors. The optimal dosage regimen is determined by the doctor. It is necessary to strictly adhere to the compliance of the dosage form of a specific drug with the indications for use and dosage regimen.

Administer orally. The specific regimen depends on the pharmaceutical form and the patient’s age.

For the tincture, dilute the dose in a small amount of water and take before meals. Adults: 20-30 drops per dose, 3-4 times daily. For children: administer a number of drops equal to the child’s age in years.

For tablets and herbal raw material, determine the dose individually based on the specific product formulation and the patient’s age.

Adverse Reactions

Hypersensitivity reactions may occur in some individuals.

Administration of high doses can lead to lethargy, depression, weakness, and a decrease in performance.

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to valerian or any component of the preparation.
  • Children under 12 years of age.
  • The first trimester of pregnancy.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation

Contraindicated in the first trimester of pregnancy.

Use in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy and during breastfeeding is possible in cases where the expected benefit of therapy for the mother outweighs the potential risk to the fetus or infant.

Use in Hepatic Impairment

Can be used in patients with hepatic impairment.

Use in Renal Impairment

Can be used in patients with renal impairment.

Pediatric Use

Contraindicated in children under 12 years of age.

Geriatric Use

Used in elderly patients.

Drug Interactions

Concomitant use with other central nervous system (CNS) depressants (e.g., sedatives, hypnotics, tranquilizers, alcohol) may result in potentiation of the sedative effects.

Exercise caution and monitor for excessive sedation when combining with such agents.

Overdose

Symptoms of overdose are an exaggeration of the known adverse reactions.

Manifestations may include severe lethargy, drowsiness, profound weakness, and gastrointestinal discomfort.

Treatment is symptomatic and supportive. There is no specific antidote. Gastric lavage may be considered if ingestion is recent.

Storage Conditions

Store at 15°C (59°F) to 25°C (77°F). Keep in original packaging, protected from light. Keep out of reach of children.
